Trading Standards and The Federation Target Cardiff Resellers |
| Joint Action First of its Kind as Federation Supports Trading Standards Cold Calls on Resellers In the first action of its kind The Federation Against Software Theft has joined forces with Trading Standards Officers in Cardiff to support its latest initiative in cold calling on resellers in the city. The campaign being undertaken today November 8th 2007, will see Trading Standards teams using their powers under the Trademarks Act of 1994 to check whether the software being sold is within the law. This is the first such initiative in the UK with Trading Standards Officers now able to use their powers of inspection under the terms of the law, while The Federation acts as an additional resource on the ground during this operation. John Lovelock, Director General of The Federation, stated: “Technology is constantly giving criminals new ways of committing crimes and theft is a major issue that has to be addressed. As a result we intend to fully co-operate with Trading Standards so that together we can clamp down on those responsible for piracy and protect owners of Intellectual Property. We are working towards the same aim as Trading Standards, doing some groundbreaking work and exploring new boundaries granted by legislation to protect the software industry in the UK and further afield.” Gordon Brown recently announced £5 million for trading standards to enforce copyright, Trading Standards officers now have the duty and power to enforce against criminal copyright offences. As such the body may now work with enforcement agencies like The Federation to investigate copyright offences and may enter UK workplaces. Dave Holland, Cardiff Trading Standards, added: “Trading standards may now work in cooperation with representative bodies to enforce the law surrounding copyright infringement. The law has strengthened our position giving copyright offences the attention they should have received 13 years ago when first entered into the statute book. Trading Standards can not operate with its hands tied – we can now move forward to address something that has been ignored for far too long”. |
