Federation appoints new Chief Executive to carry forward 21st Century vision |
| The Federation Against Software Theft (The Federation) board of directors has appointed John Lovelock as its new Chief Executive. This appointment demonstrates the growing and targeted focus that the enforcement body is placing on IP theft and corporate compliance. Outlining the vision for the future Lovelock said, “The Federation has achieved enormous success in recent years fighting IP theft, standing up for members’ rights and lobbying for tougher measures against offenders. Our intention is to further strengthen our remit and focus directly on supporting and upholding standards in business, such as the recent software asset management standard launched in May 2006 by the International Standards Organisation, ISO/IEC19770 Software Asset Management Standard, the IT Service Management Standard, ISO20000 and of course the FAST Standard for Software Compliance (FSSC1-2007). These standards help to define the best practice landscape, and support the other pillars of the Federation's objectives, including Enforcement, Lobbying and Education.” John Lovelock joined The Federation Against Software Theft in 2002 as Manager for Federation and Legal Affairs before taking up the role as Director General two years later. As Director General of The Federation, Lovelock’s experience and skills were instrumental in a number of key successes including aggressive and effective lobbying achievements such as the enactment of Section 107A of the Copyright, Designs and Patents act 1988 in its entirety - not watered down as many wanted, the Enterprise Act part 9 Civil Gateway for passing evidence on to rights holders for civil enforcement, and the Enforcement Directive Article 4, which establishes representative rights for bodies such The Federation to take enforcement action on behalf of their industry in its own name instead of in the name of the purely legal victim, as current law demands. As Chief Executive, Lovelock will set about transforming the shape of The Federation by laying out his intention to raise the level of standards in business while promoting best practice and continuing with further lobbying efforts. Philip Keown, newly elected Chairman of The Federation asserts, “With the increasing pace of digitisation, and the ease with which copyright can be abused, the importance of a strong regime to both protect and enforce the intellectual property rights of software publishers has never been more relevant. The Federation is committed to strengthening the legal and compliance frameworks which protect this important part of the UK economy, and to raising governance standards and awareness." Lovelock is a seasoned industry campaigner with a wealth of knowledge in business, legal compliance and the IT sector and will draw on this experience to lead The Federation forward. “In order to meet the challenges ahead The Federation needs to widen its remit by further representing success stories and tackling IP theft head on and I relish the fresh challenges that lie in store,” he added. |
