FAST Joins Mobile Revolution But Advises Caution |
| The IT Security Group, formed by The Federation Against Software Theft (The Federation), last week called for businesses to embrace the benefits of mobile working but warned that they must take appropriate precautions. Speakers from Nexus Technology, Secon and Ultima Business Solutions joined forces at The Royal College of Surgeons in London to advise FAST Corporate Services members about the ways in which the risks of mobile working can be mitigated through new technologies and cultural change. Also supporting the event were Reflex Magnetics, SecureWave, Websense, Whale Communications and 3M Privacy Filters. Also under scrutiny was the personal use of laptops and PDAs by employees. A recent survey of FAST Corporate Services members revealed that 86 per cent of them said that staff did use mobile devices owned by the company for personal use. However, a separate research project revealed that less than half (42 per cent) of the respondents felt that their current software auditing tool was good at gathering information from remote users, meaning that users could be downloading illegal software, or gathering viruses and spyware, without the company’s knowledge. “Mobile working is here to stay, with eight million people already working from home at least one day a week ,” said John Lovelock, director general at The Federation. “It’s perfectly manageable from a security perspective, but organisations must be sensible and take precautions according to the level of risk that their mobile workers present.” Chris Minchin, membership manager at FAST Corporate Services, said: “Businesses must include all remote devices in their software audits, to ensure they are legally compliant and not presenting any risk to the company with unlicensed software or illegally downloaded files. “It’s also essential that companies implement policies and procedures – and enforce them consistently – so that users understand what they can and can’t do when using company-owned kit.” |
