Software licences 'needed to beat credit crunch' |

People who do not invest in software licences in the current economic climate are open to losing money through IT audits, according to a pair of computing experts. David Flint and Valerie Surgenor told Mondaq that the Business Software Alliance (BSA) is looking to come down on companies using unlicensed software across their systems, adding that 2008 was a particularly lively year for the IT audit, resulting in numerous fines throughout the 12-month period. The experts continued: "With software piracy studies estimating nearly $4 billion (£2.5 billion) in global losses, it is easy to understand why members of the BSA, such as Apple, Microsoft and Adobe, mean business when they take unlicensed users to task." It was recommended that companies carry out regular software audits using software asset management and identify business needs such as extra licences as and when they are needed. General public licences still continue to be provided by GNU, which can copyright personally-owned work. |
