Scottish companies in trouble with BSA over licensing |
|
Two businesses in Scotland have been caught using illegal programs that required a software licence, causing them to be fined by the Business Software Alliance (BSA). Based in Renfrewshire, Total Repair Solutions have been fined over £120,000 for its use of unlicensed technology, including Microsoft programs that are installed on over 100 computers. A motor dealership, John R Weir, was also fined £24,582 for its use of Adobe, Symantec and Microsoft products, with the company complying with the BSA to reach an agreement. Commenting on the recent action taken against his company by the BSA, a spokesman for John R Weir said: "We now understand the importance of ensuring our licenses are up-to-date and the potential threats we were exposed to. "We have taken major steps to ensure the effective management of our software licenses and would urge other companies to do the same." The BSA is a non-profit trade organisation funded by its members including FrontRange Solutions, Microsoft, IBM and Dell. |
