Keep on top of filing 'in case of software audit' |

Businesses should always keep on top of their software assets and licences in case of an IT audit, it has been stated. Adrian Mars, an IT consultant from the UK, said in his blog on ZDNet that compliance seemed like a lot of unnecessary red tape but consequences for not keeping up with auditors could be dire for a company. He highlighted that with whistleblowers being protected by law, it only took one piece of malpractice to be uncovered by an anonymous member of the public to result in serious fines. Mr Mars recommended: "When software is purchased online you end up with an installer file, licence key and receipt. Save each key in its own file plus a digital copy of the receipt, along with the downloaded installer." He added that everything should be kept in one place, backing everything up several times if necessary to give auditors nothing to complain about. The Business Software Alliance found that most university students were readily willing and able to get hold of illegal software. |
