Businesses should ensure that their assets are adequately protected by software licenses, with software asset management (SAM) now a necessity in the modern workplace, it has been stated. Kacey Weinberg of Aspera GmbH said that a number of raids and legal actions involving such companies as Microsoft had highlighted the need for SAM solutions, with IT audits regularly keeping businesses on their toes. She commented on the importance of SAM in its ability to perform gap analyses, measuring the need for licenses against the use of the programs themselves, showing which programs were and were not needed. Ms Weinberg added that businesses should not simply research the SAM solution that they would like to use. She continued: "Look at the solution provider as a partner who will work with you to establish effective processes for software license management and train your IT staff to gain an understanding of the data and procedures on an ongoing basis." Microsoft added that to maintain quality software, management also needed to be effective and given a lot of attention. |
