Open source is future of licensing industry |

Open source software is the future of the industry, offering more flexibility, value for money and freedom, according to a new study. The research from North Bridge Venture Partners said that open source is a more attractive software option, reports Mid Market. Over half of the study's respondents said that open source is a viable business model, in addition to being a development and marketing model. Another 72 per cent of respondents think the subscription model will overtake the perpetual licensing model, with the system having increased in popularity year on year, said the website. Forty per cent of those surveyed said they felt open source subscription fees would represent two-thirds of the market, with perpetual licenses accounting for one-third. In addition, the survey found that the web publishing, social software and business intelligence industries would be affected most by open source in the next few years. Martin Mickos, chief of MySql, recently said the rise in open source software is turning the industry around. |
