April 2010SHOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OR BAN SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE WORKPLACE?Over the past few years Web 2.0 - the rise of social networks and virtual worlds - or to be honest whatever we choose to describe the new form of the internet, has grown rapidly and has become both a social as well as a business phenomenon. In the early days of the internet, communication was something that took place between one to many whereas now the variety of applications available induce a many to many environment. Our teenagers use social networks and virtual worlds as a means of communicating from many to any! Social Networks and Virtual Worlds Let's remind ourselves what social networks and virtual worlds are. The term social network was first coined by Professor J A Barnes in the 1950s who defined the size of the social network as a group of about 100 to 150 people. Social networks are an environment made available by a service provider that enables subscribers to exchange information, photographs and personal data often like a glorified diary where, in the case of the young particularly, vast amounts of personal information, ideas and "confidences" are disclosed to almost anyone. April 2010Software Audits On The Rise: Fact or Fiction? When the global economy first sank into recession, dozens of reports were published in which technology analysts speculated that software vendors would rely more heavily on software audits - and the resulting financial settlements - to compensate for lower revenues. In these agreements, annual fees go up, but can almost never be reduced - even if the customer's business has downsized. Big software's strategies involve discount structures that lead to "shelfware" and renewal traps, combined with additional charges for things like moving software between entities or accessing the customer's own data ...Read more... |
April 2010Virtualisation and license compliance challengesDatacentre server virtualisation saves space, power and hardware costs for thousands of enterprises by allowing multiple software instances of a computing platform to run concurrently on one physical machine, increasing hardware utilisation. These virtual machines or 'VMs' are capable of running both an operating system and a set of applications, with the dominant approach to server virtualisation being a thin software layer - or hypervisor - between the physical machine and the VMs. While there are many benefits to virtualisation, an often overlooked aspec...Read more... | April 2010Social Networking - An Anti-Social Business Phenomena? With sites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube thriving in use both personally and in the business environment, cybercriminals are rapidly taking advantage, launching increasingly sophisticated Web-based attacks to steal data.
